Colonial Williamsburg is one of the premier family vacation destinations in the United States. The entire town has been restored as a living history lesson of early American life. Nearby Jamestown was the first permanent English settlement. Williamsburg, where Patrick Henry, Thomas Jefferson, George Mason, and others debated the issues of freedom in the House of Burgesses. The battle grounds of Yorktown where Washington defeated Cornwallis. Back then there was no Colonial, Fords Colony, or Kingsmill Golf Courses. If there had been.....America would still be a colony!
Golf in the Williamsburg, Virgina area should be thought of as quality not quanity. Every course in the area is maticulously maintaned. The courses range from very playable to very difficult. With the advent of the "Upscale Daily Fee" golf course the rates at some of the newer courses climbed dramatically at first. But lack of play at the higher end courses caused management to re-think their pricing which resulted in a slight decrease in greens fees, especially in the off season. One course we played had a green fee of $75.00 the first time we visited and was bustling with golfers. The second time we visited, after they had been voted the "Best New Course" by a magazine, the green fees had jumped to $125.00 and the course was relatively quiet. Considering Williamsburg's reputation as the one of the premier family destinations. Coughing up $125.00 per family member for a round of golf may be a little hard on the vacation checkbook. It also appears that the locals were refusing to pay that amount on a regular basis.
